World Cup 2014 - 96 days to go: First duel hosted tournament awarded

The 2002 FIFA World Cup was the 17th to be staged but the first to be duel hosted. Japan and South Korea initially had rival bids along with Mexico until the two nations agreed to unite their bids before the deciaion was made and were chosen unanimously ahead of Mexico. The tournament was held between 31st May and 30 June and was also the first to be held in Asia. The tournament remains the first and only World Cup to be hosted by two nations.

Brazil went on to win their 5th title that year, beating Germany in the final. Turkey finished third at that World Cup and South Korea fourth. The defending champions France earned just 1 pt in the group stages and were eliminated.
