Warning for Newcastle's Carroll
Andy Carroll was tipped for senior England honours at the start of the season, now he has been told he may not get back into the Newcastle United squad. Carroll, 21, scored four goals in his first three Premier League appearances of the season after helping the Magpies win the Championship title last season. He was dropped to the bench on Sunday, with Shola Ameobi preferred up front against Manchester City. Chris Hughton, the Newcastle manager, said he should not take a return to the starting XI for granted. "What I have to do is pick players who are going to win a game for Newcastle United," he told the Daily Mirror. "Andy had a touch of a virus last week and if you look at his last performance, he had perhaps lost that edge. "Andy is a massive part of this club, but we have to have competition in all areas."
