Under-21 call for Young
25 Aug 2006 - 15:38:23
Watford forward Ashley Young has been named in the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship qualifier against Switzerland.
England began their qualification campaign with a disappointing 2-2 draw against Moldova, but coach Peter Taylor has resisted the temptation to make widespread changes.
Young, 21, is the only completely new face in the 24-man squad for the trip to Lucerne on September 6, but there are recalls for midfielders John Welsh of Hull City and Peter Whittingham of Aston Villa.
Theo Walcott is again named in the Under-21 squad, with Steve McClaren deciding against recalling him to the senior team despite his impressive early season form for Arsenal.
England Under-21 squad:
Goalkeepers: Alnwick (Sunderland), Camp (Derby), Carson (Charlton).
Defenders: Baines (Wigan), Davies (West Brom), Ferdinand (West Ham), Hoyte (Arsenal), Richards (Man City), Onuoha (Man City), A Taylor (Middlesbrough), S Taylor (Newcastle).
Midfielders: Ambrose (Charlton), Bentley (Blackburn) Huddlestone (Tottenham), Milner (Newcastle), Reo-Coker (West Ham), Routledge (Tottenham), Soares (Crystal Palace), Welsh (Hull), Whittingham (Aston Villa).
Forwards: Jerome (Birmingham), Nugent (Preston), Walcott (Arsenal), Young (Watford).
