U21s are in lap of the gods

The England U21 side must find a real cutting edge when they take on Lithuania in Colchester on Tuesday night. England must win the match to have any chance of a play-off place in their European Championship qualifying campaign, but it could still go down to goal difference. Greece have already won the group. "The starting point is to win the game and after that with the biggest margin possible, then we are in the lap of the gods," said Stuart Pearce, the U21 coach. "It shows how difficult qualification for this tournament is. We could have a situation where we win the game comfortably and still it is not good enough to send us into the play-offs. "We knew we had to win two matches - we have won one and if we win the other and get to the play-offs, then the ante will go up even more. "It is all part of international football. A lot of that is players playing under pressure and, in the long run, all of the players will benefit."
