U17s to open European Championship

The England U17 team begin their European Championship campaign on Tuesday night when they take on the Czech Republic in Liechtenstein. The Young Three Lions are among the favourites for the tournament, but that is a tag coach John Peacock is not keen to embrace. "There are five previous winners in this year's tournament. There are some very good teams in our group and the first hurdle we have to overcome is getting to the semi-final stage and then we'll see what happens from there," he said. "We've got a good team of 18 players who all play a very big part. This is probably the pinnacle of their careers so far and with that comes an added bit of pressure. "Hopefully all the players who take to the field will do themselves a lot of credit and I'm sure all of them will have a big part to play. "We managed to reach the final on one previous occasion but now we are looking to go one better than that. I'm very pleased with the squad, I just hope that they fulfil the potential that I think is there." England will continue the tournament by taking on Greece on Friday and Turkey on Monday. England have added the West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino to the squad as last minute cover. All three Group B games will be in Vaduz. The U17 European Championship has traditionally been the tournament where big name players first make their mark - England's Wayne Rooney was Player of the Tournament in 2002, as was Spain's Cesc Fabregas in 2004.
