Two English nationalists protest FIFA poppy ban

Two English Defence League members have climbed onto the roof of FIFA's headquarters Wednesday to protest football governing body's ban on England's players from wearing poppies on their shirts when they face Spain this week.

"They are on the roof at the moment, there are two of them," a FIFA spokesman told AFP.

FIFA had issued a statement Tuesday to confirm that England's players would not be allowed to wear the symbolic red flowers to mark Armistice Day during a friendly with Spain at Wembley on Saturday.

It said it would not make an exception to its rule that players' equipment should not carry any political, religious or commercial messages.

"Such initiatives would open the door to similar initiatives from all over the world, jeopardising the neutrality of football," it said.

British Prime Minister David Cameron earlier Wednesday slammed FIFA's decision as "outrageous."
