1966 World Cup Final - England 4-2 West Germany (aet)

They think it's all over...and it was for the Germans as a Geoff Hurst hat-trick helped secure England's first and only World Cup win. It might have taken extra-time time and a debatable goal to win it, but this Wembley victory will go down as the Three Lions' greatest ever result, let alone against Germany.

1970 World Cup Quarter-final - England 2-3 West Germany (aet)

Goals from Alan Mullery and Martin Peters had given Alf Ramsey's side a commanding 2-0 lead in this World Cup quarter-final, before an astounding German comeback spoiled our hopes of retaining the trophy. Franz Beckenbauer scored the first, going on to lead his side to a 3-2 win after extra-time.

1990 World Cup Semi-final - England 1-1 West Germany (aet, 3-4 on pens)

England exited another major tournament at the hands of the Germans, as Bobby Robson's side came up short in a penalty shoot-out. Gary Lineker had levelled the scores to force extra-time, but penalty misses from Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle cost the Three Lions a chance to contest the final with Argentina.

1996 European Championships Semi-final - England 1-1 Germany (aet, 5-6 pens)

More penalty shoot-out heartbreak against the Germans as England saw their dreams of lifting a major trophy on home soil crushed. Central defender Gareth Southgate made the swift transition to national villain after seeing his crucial spot-kick saved by German stopper Andreas Kopke.

2002 World Cup Qualifier - England 5-1 Germany

After years of frustration and bad results against the old enemy, England finally gave the country something to cheer about with this memorable win away in Munich. A Michael Owen hat-trick plus goals from Emile Heskey and Steven Gerrard rounded off a marvellous display from Sven Goran Eriksson's side.
