Tony Adams joins the ranks of ex-pat managers

In light of Tony Adams move to Azerbaijan's FC Gabala, Sam Parker takes a look at some of Britain's managerial exports past and present.

Tony Adams

After two rather disastrous spells as manager with Wycombe and Portsmouth, Adams has suddenly turned up today in Azerbaijan. Taking the reins at FC Gabala and given an unlimited war-chest, he is expected to help them challenge for the league title. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Roy Hodgson

Europa League victory with Fulham won't be Hodgson's first miracle on the continent. He won the most unprecedented title with Halmstads in Sweden back in 1976, and has since managed in Switzerland (Neuchatel Xamax, Grasshopper), Italy (Inter Milan, Udinese), Denmark (FC Copenhagen) and Norway (Viking), as well as spells in charge of the Swiss, UAE and Finnish national sides. What a CV!

Steve McClaren

So much has changed for the ‘Wally with the Brolly' since he was hounded out of Britain after disaster in charge of England. McClaren took over at FC Twente last season, led them to the Champions League, only to be knocked out by Sporting Lisbon in the qualifying rounds, and then went one better by winning the Dutch League for the first time in the club's history. He has since been headhunted by a number of clubs and joined Wolfsburg earlier this week.

Graham Souness

Souness enjoyed his finest spell away from these shores as manager of Galatasary, where he is a legend at the club, having planted a Galatasary flag in the middle of rivals Fenerbache's pitch after defeating them in the Turkish Cup.

Stints at Torino and Benfica proved less successful for Souness who has seemingly given up the managerial ghost.

Stuart Baxter

Not a household name for some reason, but Baxter has been about the block. He's most famous for his stints in Sweden, where he led AIK to league glory and the Champions League group stages. He's also had spells in Japan and Norway and is currently in charge of the Finland national team.

Sir Bobby Robson

The great man himself managed successfully abroad, winning titles at PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon and Porto, whilst also delivering the European Cup Winners Cup to Barcelona. He made such an impression that Barca president Joan Laporta attended his funeral.

John Toshack

John Toshack landed the big one, by getting the real Madrid gig in 1990, where he won La Liga. He also managed cup successes with Real Sociedad, Deportivo La Coruna and Besiktas in Turkey.

Terry Venables

Venables also took the reins at Barcelona, where he remained for three years. He won a title, a cup and it took a heart-breaking penalties defeat to Steaua Bucharest to stop him landing a European Cup to the trophy cabinet.

Craig Short

Short surprisingly turned up in Hungary after calling time on his playing career as manager of fallen giants, Ferencvaros. He is already looking to leave the club however over a disagreement at the club and has been linked with the Hull job.

Chris Coleman

In between spells at Fulham and Coventry, Coleman had a short-lived spell with Real Sociedad, after being recommended by Toshack. Failing to get them near promotion and having numerous disagreements with the owner, Coleman left his post after less than one season.

Steve Nicol

The former Liverpool defender has been managing in the USA for the past decade, having started out at the Boston Bulldogs before beginning his ongoing eight-year stint as manager of New England Revolution, where won three consecutive MLS Cups between 2005 and 2007.
