The football world is rallying round Laura Bassett after her World Cup own goal nightmare

It’s been the lot of so many England players over the years, but today it was Laura Bassett coming to terms with the fact that her slip led to England’s exit from the World Cup.

The defender’s late, late own goal gave Japan a 2-1 win in their semi-final match and denied them a place in the final against the United States.

In the hours that followed her team-mates were showing their support publicly for their fellow Lioness.

And the coach had his say too.

One person who knew what Bassett was going through more than most was Faye White, who missed the decisive penalty in England’s shoot-out defeat to France in the 2011 tournament.

A couple of American World Cup winners were impressed by Bassett and her team-mates.

Stars from the men’s game past and present also watched events unfold.

And athletes from further afield pitched in too.

Meanwhile, fans used the hashtag #proudofbassett to show their support – led by her own brother.

Maybe all this support will give Bassett the slightest crumb of comfort today.
