    Terry calls for fan support

    29 Mar 2007 - 07:30:28

Captain John Terry has called on unhappy supporters to end their jeering of the England side during matches.

Terry and his team-mates came under fire from disgruntled fans midway through the first half of an unconvincing 3-0 victory over Andorra in Barcelona on Wednesday evening.

The booing and jeering then reached a crescendo at half-time with England unable to find a way through a packed Andorra defence.

The Group E minnows had conceded 19 goals in their four Euro 2008 qualifiers prior to meeting England for the second time, but Steve McClaren's side produced an insipid 45 minutes following hard on the heels a poor goalless draw with Israel at the weekend.

However, Terry has urged the fans to back the side and has called on supporters to end their criticism of the under-fire McClaren.

Referring to the negative reaction from the terraces against Androrra, he said: "During the game isn't nice for the players.

"They are entitled to their opinion, but I think for the players' sake, and England's sake, it is best if they keep their opinions until after the game.

"The booing or McClaren shouts are not helping.

"The players have stood up and taken responsibility for underachieving in recent games and we take that, not the manager."
