    Terry backs England quality

    15 Nov 2006 - 08:52:04

England captain John Terry has challenged his side to show the quality regularly on display in the Premiership in the friendly against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

The likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have struggled on the international stage in recent times, but Terry has no doubts about the ability of Steve McClaren's much-vaunted squad.

He commented: "It baffles me when people say other countries are better technically than us.

"When we look at our players and the league we play in, it baffles me because we are playing in the best league in the world.

"Okay, from the word go people are getting at each other and at each other's throats, but you see people like Stevie and Lamps spraying balls around the park and showing great left and right-foot finishing.

"But there is no point saying 'we've got this player who can do this and that'. We really need to now start showing and doing it against Holland and onwards from there."

Terry also confirmed that the 3-5-2 formation that worked so badly in Croatia last time out is still an option in the future.

"We all agree the formation didn't work in the Croatia game but at the same time we've all played 3-5-2 at club level," Terry added.

"It didn't work in Zagreb, but it is still in the locker for the future and we've got defenders who can play that role. On that particular night it just didn't happen."
