Sunderland want Hart replacement

The Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has targeted the Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart for a short-term loan. Bruce will be without his first-choice keeper Craig Gordon for at least six weeks due to a broken arm while backup Marton Fulop is moving to the Championship side Ipswich Town. Hart impressed while on loan at Birmingham City last season but City refused to allow him to return to St Andrews on loan this summer - saying they want him to fight for the number one spot at Eastlands with Shay Given. Bruce is hoping they may be prepared to allow Hart to move to the Stadium of Light on a short-term deal. "We've asked the question of City and we now just have to wait and see what they say. But the timetable is not up to us on when we get an answer, it's up to them," Bruce told the Sunderland Echo. "With these new 25-man squad rules, clubs don't have to name their confirmed squads until the end of August so, if they wanted to, City could delay any decisions on their squad until then." Bruce had also held talks with David James, who has since dropped into the Championship with Bristol City.
