Stones backs England for Euro glory

John Stones is convinced England can win the European Under-21 Championship.

Despite being drawn in a tough group containing Portugal, Sweden and Italy, England are among the favourites for the tournament, which begins next week in the Czech Republic.

England had been tipped to win the trophy last time around, but they crashed out at the group stage after losing all three matches.

Stones insists things will be different this time around, though.

With a potent strikeforce of Danny Ings, Harry Kane and Saido Berahino - as well as a number of other Premier League regulars - among their ranks, Stones believes England have the quality to go all the way and win the trophy for the first time in 31 years.

"I think we can win it, definitely," the Everton centre-back said.

"With the squad we have got and the games we have won in the past against top teams, we will be confident and positive.

"We have got plenty of goals in the team. The attacking threat we have will cause teams problems and there are a lot of unsung heroes.

"We are aware we haven't won it for a while and we are going to try and change that."

Before Stones and his team-mates fly to the Czech Republic, they have one final warm-up match to play against Belarus.

For the 21-year-old, the friendly will be a special one as it will see him return to his home town of Barnsley, where he came through the youth ranks before being sold to Everton two years ago.

"It's going to be a good day," said Stones, a Barnsley fan, who grew up a short car ride from Oakwell.

"It will be nice to see everyone again. I think it will be good for my family to come and watch. I try and get back and watch Barnsley.

"I was there the last game of the season but to play on Oakwell again, it will be special moment for me. I have a lot of great memories."
