Southgate names first England U21 squad

Gareth Southgate has picked Tottenham's Zeki Fryers and James Ward-Prowse of Southampton in his first squad since being appointed as England Under-21s head coach.

Southgate has named a 25-man squad for the upcoming European Championship qualifying double-header which begins against Moldova in Reading on September 5 before travelling to Finland four days later.

Fryers is called up for the first time having previously represented England at U16, U17 and U19 levels, while Ward-Prowse has been rewarded for his impressive early performances for Saints.

Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell has also been named in the Under-21s squad for the first time since November last year.

Powell's fellow United player, Wilfried Zaha, is also included, as is Jesse Lingaard.

England Under-21 Squad:

Goalkeepers: Bond (Watford), Butland (Stoke), Long (Sheffield United).

Defenders: Dier (Sporting Lisbon), Fryers (Tottenham Hotspur), Kane (Blackburn, on loan from Chelsea), Keane (Manchester United), Robinson (Blackpool, on loan from Liverpool), Shaw (Southampton), Stones (Everton), Thorpe (Manchester United), Wisdom (Liverpool).

Midfielders: Carroll (Tottenham), Chalobah (Chelsea), Hughes (Derby), Powell (Manchester United), Shelvey (Swansea), Ward-Prowse (Southampton).

Wide: Ameobi (Newcastle), Lingard (Manchester United), Redmond (Norwich), Zaha (Manchester United).
