Smalling sees bright future

Chris Smalling believes the future looks bright for England, despite their World Cup coming to a premature end.

The current crop saw their elimination confirmed with a game to spare, with defeats to Italy and Uruguay making Tuesday's clash with surprise package Costa Rica a dead rubber.

Roy Hodgson has pledged to make changes for the match in Belo Horizonte, where Manchester United defender Smalling is set to come into the starting line-up.

The 24-year-old believes that despite their early exit, a promising future awaits for England.

"All the way through I have been able to take part in the training sessions and give my all and if the opportunity comes on Tuesday then I will grab it," Smalling told www.thefa.com.

"There are a lot of young and exciting players coming through and that core will carry on going into Tuesday.

"That will be shown and hopefully we can put some smiles back on people's faces after the disappointment.

"Going into the Euro qualifiers there is a good squad that we can really build on together."
