Slovenia v England talking points

10 October 2016 16:53

England take on Slovenia in Ljubljana on Tuesday, looking to make it three wins from three in World Cup qualifying.

Here Press Association looks at some of the key areas of discussion going into the game.

THE WAYNE ROONEY QUESTION

The ongoing debate over Wayne Rooney's role in the side appears to have reached boiling point, with interim boss Gareth Southgate set to drop the captain.

The match is still likely to be viewed through the Rooney prism, though, with the side judged on whether or not they thrive in his absence and the 30-year-old likely to be watched intently on the sidelines.

Southgate has grasped the nettle despite his temporary ownership of the manager's office and will know he needs a smooth display to back up his decision.

How things unfold here could tell us a lot about the future direction of the national side.

WHO TAKES THE ARMBAND? Should Rooney be confined to a watching brief he will need to pass along leadership duties to one of his team-mates.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart is the most experienced player in the squad after Rooney, while Jordan Henderson skippered the team in a pre-Euros friendly against Australia this summer.

But Gary Cahill seems a safe bet, having been vice-captain under Hodgson as well as being on the cusp of his 50th cap.

WILL ENGLAND ANSWER SOUTHGATE'S CALL FOR BRAVERY?

The interim manager's appeal for aggressive, free-flowing, even risky football was not quite heeded against Malta.

Southgate recognises the need to offer entertainment as well as efficiency but can he persuade his side to throw caution to the wind away from home?

CAN ENGLAND SHUT OUT THE HOSTS?

Roy Hodgson's England conceded just three goals in Euro 2016 qualifying - all against Slovenia.

The Three Lions racked up eight clean sheets against their other group rivals but conceded first on both occasions when facing the Slovenians before recovering to claim a 3-1 win at home and 3-2 away.

Central defenders John Stones and Gary Cahill have had an easy ride in the past two games but may now need to be on greater alert.

FINDING A FINISH

England's inability to put away multiple chances at the Euros exasperated Hodgson and things have not improved sharply in that department.

Twenty chances yielded just two goals against Malta, whose goalkeeper Andrew Hogg denied Theo Walcott, Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli in clear scoring opportunities.

Slovenia keeper Jan Oblak is a high-class operator and the Atletico Madrid man will not be beaten easily.
