Scholes rejected England return

If Fabio Capello, the England coach, had his way then Jamie Carragher would not be the only player coming out of international retirement for this summer's World Cup. The Italian - fresh from announcing his provisional 30 man squad for the World Cup, complete with Carragher two years after he retired from England - unsuccessfully tried to coax Paul Scholes back into the Three Lions fold. Scholes, 35, turned his back on his country after Euro 2004 - and has resisted Capello's overtures to return. "I tried. It was up to him. He said no. We have been monitoring him for the second part of the season and he has played very well," he said. "We tried to convince him to come back for England because he is one of the best players. But he preferred to stay with his family."
