Saints left-back Luke Shaw welcomes strong England competiton

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw has welcomed the strong competition provided by the likes of Leighton Baines and Ashley in cementing his England place.

The 18 year-old received his first call-up from Roy Hodgson on Friday, having been included in his squad to face Denmark on Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively to TheFA.com, the Saints full-back additionally claimed to have been inspired by the Southampton contingent in Roy Hodgson's side ;

"To have competition like that (Cole and Baines) is amazing for me and I'm only going to thrive off it"

"Jay's (Rodriguez) and Rickie's (Lambert) call-ups made us realise that they (Hodgson and FA) are looking at clubs like Southampton and if we're playing well, we're going to get an opportunity" he added

Shaw, a produce of Southampton's impressive conveyer belt of young talent, is in line to start against the Danes with Hodgson confirming that Baines will be rested. Wednesday evening's encounter at Wembley is nothing short of an audition for Shaw and Cole.

"It's the right moment to look at one of, or both, Luke and Ashley," said Hodgson.

"Unless we get an incredible number of injuries, Leighton won't feature."

Kyle Walker has been ruled out of the game with a hip injury, subsequently meaning Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson will start to earn his 50th international cap.

"Walker hasn't played for the last two or three games and we were hoping he would recover but he needs at least another week before he will be fit to play," said Hodgson.

"If you insist I tell you Glen Johnson will get his 50th cap at right-back, then I can say yes."
