Rooney wants England record
07 Oct 2009 - 09:22:59
Striker Wayne Rooney has revealed his ambition to break Sir Bobby Charlton's record as England's leading goalscorer.
Rooney, 23, has scored 25 goals in his 55 appearances for the Three Lions to date.
The Manchester United striker is more than halfway towards Charlton's record haul of 49 and Rooney has admitted that his landmark is already on his mind.
"I spoke to Sir Bobby last week about it and we discussed playing and scoring for England," he told the Daily Star.
"It would be a dream come true to do it and mean so much to me.
"It would also be fantastic if two Manchester United players were to be one and two in the list.
"But don't rule out Michael (Owen) and he still has a chance of the record."
Meanwhile, Rooney has played down suggestions that he is currently playing the best football of his career.
"I have played better," he added. "I think it's because I am scoring more goals - and forwards are always judged on goals - that people are saying I'm in my best form.
"I honestly believe I can get a lot better. I know I can. I would certainly like to score more goals."
