Wayne Rooney was left out of Manchester United's squad to face Everton on Saturday, a Sir Alex Ferguson sought to keep him out of the media spotlight after a week of stories about his private life. Revelations that he had cheated on his wife Colleen with prostitute did not prevent the England coach Fabio Capello from selecting him to face Switzerland on Tuesday night. He scored the opening goal in a 3-1 success. With no suggestion of injury, Rooney was taken out of the firing line by Ferguson as he expected Everton supporters to remind him about his personal problems in no uncertain terms.
