Robinson retires from England duty
08 Aug 2010 - 10:27:59
Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson has withdrawn from the England squad to face Hungary on Wednesday and has retired from international football.
The 30-year-old had been handed a recall after missing the World Cup finals in South Africa, but has instead opted against accepting the call-up and has called time after winning 41 caps.
A statement from Robinson confirmed: "I've taken the decision to retire from international football with immediate effect.
"Only now have I been able to make this decision as previously I have not been in contention or selected for the squad.
"As a professional who wants every chance to play football, I do not see myself as number three or four goalkeeper.
"I find that role very frustrating. I haven't had the opportunity to be anything other than this in recent years.
"Therefore I feel it's in the best interests of myself and my club, Blackburn Rovers, that I concentrate solely on my club football. I wish the England team every success."
No replacement has been called up by Fabio Capello, with Birmingham City's Ben Foster and Manchester City's Joe Hart his remaining two goalkeepers.
