Robinson shuns England recall

Paul Robinson has rejected his recall to the England squad and retired from international football. Robinson, 30, was one of three goalkeepers named in the Three Lions squad named by Fabio Capello to take on Hungary in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday. Instead of joining up with the squad and fighting it out with Joe Hart and Ben Foster to show he deserves to be first choice keeper for the European Championship qualifying campaign, he has withdrawn from the squad - saying he does not want to be a backup player. "I've taken the decision to retire from international football with immediate effect. Only now have I been able to make this decision as previously I have not been in contention or selected for the squad," he said. "As a professional who wants every chance to play football, I do not see myself as number three or four goalkeeper. "I find that role very frustrating. I haven't had the opportunity to be anything other than this in recent years. "Therefore I feel it's in the best interests of myself and my club, Blackburn Rovers, that I concentrate solely on my club football. I wish the England team every success." Capello will not add another keeper to his squad, leaving Hart and Foster likely to play 45 minutes each on Wednesday.
