    Rio suffers new groin woe

    29 May 2007 - 08:12:57

England manager Steve McClaren could be without the services of Rio Ferdinand for the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia as the Manchester United star has suffered a recurrence of a groin injury.

The former West Ham United and Leeds defender had problems with the injury towards the end of the Premiership season and it has flared up again.

Ferdinand will have a scan to explore the extent of the damage but may not be able to travel to Estonia for the 6 June clash.

If he fails to recover in time, Jamie Carragher is the favourite to replace him.

The Liverpool stalwart is expected to partner John Terry in the heart of England's defence for Friday's friendly against Brazil and may keep his place for the Estonia game as Jonathan Woodgate is scheduled to have required cartilage surgery this summer.

Tottenham's defensive duo Ledley King and Michael Dawson are also in McClaren's 26-man squad and impressed during England B's 3-1 win over Albania last week.
