Rio Ferdinand is Heading to Rio After All

Ferdinand will be joining BBC’s team of pundits heading to the World Cup next summer. The former England captain will join regular pundits Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker and former team mate Phil Neville to analyze the World Cup games.

The Manchester United defender is looking forward to join the big event although he will be doing so behind the scenes.

“I can’t wait to be involved in the BBC’s coverage, both as a studio pundit and with all the other exciting opportunities we’re working on,” said Ferdinand.

“I really want to provide a different sort of insight and analysis, sharing my experiences of what it is like to be an England footballer at a major tournament.”

Roy Hodgson left the 35-year old out of his Euro 2012 squad. The decision caused a lot of controversy especially when Hodgson called up 22-year old Martin Kelly who had two minute of England experience.

Many came to the conclusion that Ferdinand was not chosen because it would be impossible for him to share a dressing room with John Terry, who was accused of racially abusing Rio's younger brother, Anton.

However, he admits he will not hold back from interacting with viewers at the World Cup and plans to give the most personal and in-depth coverage.

The United defender “wants to interact with audiences throughout the summer, using social media to answer viewer questions and provide extra content.”

Ferdinand will of course be cheering on England especially with some fellow United teammates participating in the tournament. But he is also looking forward to see how other Premier League players perform on the big stage.

BBC presenter Lineker is excited about having the world-class defender join the punditry team.

“Rio has a reputation for telling it how it is and I’m sure audiences will look forward to hearing his opinions and insight in the studio. He is a fine footballer with a proven track record and has played with and against some of the top internationals who will be at the World Cup” said Lineker.
