Previous England caretaker managers

Following the departure of England manager Sam Allardyce, Under-21s coach Gareth Southgate is set to charge of the senior team for the next four matches.

Here, football.co.uk takes a look back at how previous caretaker managers have done in their short time at the helm:

JOE MERCER

Former Manchester City and Coventry boss Mercer took charge of England for a seven-match spell following the departure of Sir Alf Ramsey after the failure to qualify for the 1974 World Cup. Mercer, who previously had spells at Sheffield United and Aston Villa, guided England to success in the Home Nations Championship, before the Football Association eventually secured the services of Don Revie from Leeds.

HOWARD WILKINSON

Wilkinson, who won the old First Division title with Leeds in 1992 before it became the Premier League, was in the role of technical director with the FA when he took charge of a friendly against France following the sacking of Glenn Hoddle in 1999. England were beaten 2-0 by the world champions at Wembley. The veteran coach was again asked to step in during October 2000 after Kevin Keegan had resigned, this time for a World Cup qualifier against Finland in Helsinki, which ended in a goalless draw.

KEVIN KEEGAN

Keegan was appointed England caretaker in February 1999, while still in charge of Fulham as the club chased promotion back to the top flight. After England had beaten Poland 3-1 at Wembley and drawn 1-1 away to Hungary in a friendly, Keegan took permanent charge in May 1999. Under his tenure, England would beat Scotland to qualify for Euro 2000, where they lost the opening game against Portugal having been 2-0 up before beating Germany 1-0 only to lose late on against Romania and exit in the group stage. Keegan eventually resigned after the 1-0 defeat by Germany in the final match at the old Wembley Stadium.

PETER TAYLOR

After Newcastle refused permission for Sir Bobby Robson to step back into the England hotseat, Taylor, who had previously been a successful coach of the Under-21s, was appointed part-time caretaker manager at the end of October 2000. Taylor's only match in charge was the friendly away to Italy, which a youthful England side captained by David Beckham lost 1-0 in Turin.

STUART PEARCE

Following the departure of Fabio Capello in February 2012 in the wake of captain John Terry being stripped of the captaincy by the FA, Pearce - who had been part of the Italian's backroom staff as well as working with the Under-21s and Team GB - was given the England job on a temporary basis. Pearce's only match in charge was for a 3-2 friendly defeat against Holland at Wembley later that month, but he stayed on until Roy Hodgson's took over the role at the start of May 2012.
