Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, conceded the league has not provided enough English players of international standard - but warned against "artificially" promoting homegrown players ahead of foreign signings. Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the Premier League, has conceded the top flight of football in England has not provided enough players of international standard. The apparent lack of English players at the top level in their home nation has brought suggestions that there should be limits on foreign players. Scudamore riles against that, pointing out that 42 per cent of playes in the Premier League last season were English. "If you go too far and try to artificially prop up English talent which isn't good enough it won't get the league or England anywhere," he said . "Populating our league with players who aren't good enough to compete with the world's best won't be good. "We have to make sure development systems are bringing through enough players of world-class talent. "What every England fan should expect is that the players we do produce are world class and able to compete. We want the England manager to be spoilt for choice, we will take some of that responsibility "But ultimately we don't pick the team, motivate them or organise the set-up, that's where our role ends."
