Poll result - World Cup 2010 should stay in South Africa

26 January 2010 09:45
Football.co.uk's latest poll asked readers whether South Africa was the right venue for the 2010 World Cup.

The debate was prompted by the attack on the Togo team bus, which was en-route to the African Nations Cup in Angola.

The driver was killed and several players were wounded, raising concern for the safety of teams and fans at the World Cup this summer.

But 54.7% of Football.co.uk readers maintain that South Africa is the right venue for the World Cup, with 45.3% suggesting the tournament should be moved elsewhere.

Here are some of the comments from the Football.co.uk Facebook page:

Gary Olive: "I went to South Africa on Honeymoon and the local people were fanatastic and really friendly. Like all countries there are no-go areas in any city; you just have to ask where not to go; so I would have no hesitation in going."

Andrew Martin: "The terrorists would win if the World Cup was moved."

Solomon Titiloye Oyebanji: "Moving the World Cup away from South Africa because of an attack on Togolese national team in a separate competition and in a different country would be very unfair."
