Pearce: Last chance for U21s to impress

Stuart Pearce has warned his England players the next five days may be their last chance to stake a claim for a place at this summer's European Under-21 Championship.

Pearce's players travelled to Denmark for the first of a friendly double-header which sees them play the European Championship hosts on Thursday before taking on Iceland in Preston on Monday night.

"It's my last chance to have a look at them and get in my mind which 23 we're going to go with in the summer," Pearce told FATV. "Competition for places is fantastic, not just to get in the team but to get in the squad of 23."

England are looking to arrange one more warm-up match ahead of the finals in June but head coach Pearce has revealed he will have all but made up his mind about his 23-man squad after the next two games.

England prepared this week for the Denmark game at Watford's training ground in London Colney.

Pearce added: "We brought all the players together and had a good chance to speak to them all and outline what the plans are for the summer.

"To see the depth of talent that we've got sat in one room is quite staggering.

"These are the best in England, the best we've got at this age group - bar a few injuries and the couple we have in the seniors.

"It's a really exciting group and they are capable of anything.

"We've got a good 10 days with the players and we'll learn a lot more about them as a team and individually."
