Parker wins England recall
29 Sep 2006 - 16:26:59
Newcastle United midfielder Scott Parker has been recalled to the England squad by head coach Steve McClaren for next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against FYR Macedonia and Croatia.
The former Charlton Athletic and Chelsea star has been in fine form for his club so far this season and was outstanding in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Everton in the Premiership.
Parker replaces Owen Hargreaves who is recovering from a broken leg. The 25-year-old made his England debut against Denmark almost three years ago with his only other cap coming against Sweden in March 2004.
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney returns to the squad having completed a three-game ban for his sending-off during England's World Cup quarter-final defeat to Portugal. The 20-year-old replaces Darren Bent in the squad.
Gary Neville comes in for Luke Young while Jamie Carragher and Ledley King replace the injured Aaron Lennon and Michael Dawson.
England beat FYR Macedonia 1-0 in Skopje earlier this month four days after thrashing Andorra 5-0.
They face FYR Macedonia at Old Trafford on 7 October and travel to Croatia for their fourth Group E qualifier in Zagreb four days later.
The squad is:
Robinson (Tottenham), Foster (Man Utd), Kirkland (Liverpool); G Neville (Man Utd), P Neville (Everton), Brown (Man Utd), Terry (Chelsea), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Carragher (Liverpool), King (Tottenham), A Cole (Chelsea), Bridge (Chelsea); Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Jenas (Tottenham), Carrick (Man Utd), Richardson (Man Utd), Downing (Middlesbrough), Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Parker (Newcastle United); Rooney (Man Utd), Crouch (Liverpool), Johnson (Everton), Defoe (Tottenham).
