Owen admits World Cup dream is a long shot

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has admitted his chances of making England's World Cup squad are now a "long shot".

Owen, 30, has been out of the international picture for almost two years. The former Newcastle United striker was hoping a free transfer move to the Red Devils last summer would reignite his floundering 89-cap England career.

However, after starting just five Premier League games for the champions this season, Owen has failed to win back his place in the England squad.

He now believes his chances of being selected by head coach Fabio Capello for the summer's World Cup in South Africa are effectively over.

"It's been a long time since I was in the England squad," Owen told BBC Radio 5 Live. "You never give up but it's probably a long shot in racing terms."
