Nolan hopeful on England
25 Sep 2006 - 13:45:21
Bolton Wanderers midfielder Kevin Nolan is hopeful of being named in the England squad for the upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against FYR Macedonia and Croatia.
England head coach Steve McClaren needs to find a replacement for Owen Hargreaves, who recently broke his leg playing for Bayern Munich, and has confirmed he is considering the merits of Nolan and Newcastle United's Scott Parker.
The Bolton captain said: "I feel really sorry for Owen, it's a nasty thing to happen to anyone, and came when he was really starting to make his mark in an England team.
"But that can sometimes open the door for other players and it would be nice if I could get the call.
"I'll just try to concentrate on Bolton and if I'm doing really well here I know Steve McClaren will give me a chance.
"It's not extra pressure, it's nice to know he is keeping an eye on me, something the previous manager didn't do.
"It gave me a bit of a boost when I heard and hopefully if I can keep at my best for Bolton then the call will come."
Nolan, 24, is still uncapped at senior international level and has previously hinted he would welcome a call up from the Republic of Ireland, as former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson did not rate him.
