No spirit, no respect - Bougherra
Algeria defender Madjid Bougherra claims England "did not play like a team" during the goalless draw in Cape Town on Friday night.
The Three Lions left the Green Point Stadium like lambs, with the boos of their own supporters ringing in their ears, after a shambolic display against a side ranked 22 places below them in the world.
"England did not play like a team," said the Rangers defender. "They have good players but for me they were very low. But I still think they can qualify for the second round. Then you can see the best of them."
Bougherra did not put England's drab showing down to fear or pressure, as manager Fabio Capello suggested.
But he did hint at an element of complacency in English ranks, suggesting Algeria had not been given the respect they were due.
"I don't think many people thought England would draw with us," he said. "People thought Algeria were nothing.
"It was just minimal respect, although I could understand it.
"England have so many big stars and not many people know anything about Algeria. But if we are in the last 32 it is because we are a good team and we showed the world what we can do.
"When we played Slovenia in the first game we were afraid. Now all the people are on the street celebrating. They will give us the spirit to go forward."
