New England manager Gareth Southgate is dreaming of a shot at redemption when the European Championship returns to Wembley in 2020.
Southgate does not like to dwell on Euro 96 too long or too often, having missed the semi-final spot-kick against Germany that cost the Three Lions a golden chance to end 30 years of hurt on home soil.
The next edition of the tournament will be spread far and wide across Europe but the denouement will take place at Wembley once again and even Southgate cannot help but hope for a chance to rewrite history.
Answering a fan's question during a Q&A session on the FA's social media channels, he said: "The semi-finals and final of 2020 are at Wembley.
"That's clearly in the back of everybody's mind. Having played in the last European Championship here in 1996 and got so close as a player, I have a desire to address that record.
"That something that I think is a realistic aim for the team given the age and the way they'll mature in the next few years in particular.
"In our last two finals tournaments we haven't reached the level we'd like to so there's a lot of room for us to improve. But with the age of the squad, the desire of the squad to do well, there's every chance of that happening. We've now got to make it happen."
Southgate's first tournament at the helm, qualification allowing, will be the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
