Mile Jedinak not preparing special treatment for England striker Marcus Rashford

Australia captain Mile Jedinak could not rule out treating Marcus Rashford to a physical introduction to international football when England meet the Socceroos in Sunderland.

Rashford, the 18-year-old Manchester United striker who thrust himself into Euro 2016 contention with five Barclays Premier League goals last season, will play a "serious part" for Roy Hodgson's England in front of a sold-out Stadium of Light crowd on Friday night.

Crystal Palace midfielder Jedinak is well known for his combative approach to the game and has faced Rashford twice in recent weeks: at Old Trafford last month and at Wembley last weekend, as the Eagles were beaten to the FA Cup by United.

There was no suggestion of a personal quest for revenge on Jedinak's part but the 31-year-old will not change his spots and go easy on any England opponent just because of tender years.

When asked if he would let Rashford know he was there in the early exchanges on Wearside, Jedinak said: "It remains to be seen. Players have different ways of putting about their presence on the pitch.

"Obviously I've played against him recently and he's done fantastically well.

"We've all seen his rapid rise in the last few months and it's a credit to the boy that he's been put in this situation and is handling himself really well.

"It'll be another test for him tomorrow night, if he's given the opportunity.

"But we've been preparing for this game as we would normally, without getting too caught up with individuals."

Jedinak has put his disappointing day at Wembley behind him and is focused on helping Australia prepare well for the next glut of 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

"I was given an extra day to recover and I'm very thankful for that," he added. "It was nice to be involved in yesterday's training session and see everyone chomping at the bit and I'm no different.

"Once I got into camp I got it out of my system. There's no better way than to be around these boys, my team-mates and the staff.

"You've been given the honour and privilege to be called up for your national team and there's no better place that I want to be right now and I had to put that one behind me and look forward to tomorrow night."

Head coach Ange Postecoglou, who has British-based players including Preston's Bailey Wright, Massimo Luongo of QPR and Celtic's Tom Rogic at his disposal, will relish pitting his AFC Asian Cup holders against European opposition.

Apart from a 2-0 defeat to Jordan in October, the Socceroos dominated their last World Cup qualifying group, winning seven games. They have scored 12 goals in their last two matches.

Postecoglou said: "We're preparing for our World Cup campaign ahead.

"Over the last 12 months we've had the first phase of qualifying and come through that strongly but it's been against Asian opposition and we don't get many windows in which we can play against opposition outside of our confederation and test ourselves away from home.

"It's a great opportunity to do that and expose some of our players, and possibly some new ones.

"It's an opportunity to improve as a team and we'll be taking that opportunity tomorrow night."

When asked if he expects Hodgson to field a different XI from the one that beat Turkey 2-1, the former Melbourne Victory boss added: "Their objectives are a little bit different with the Euros just around the corner and they'll play players they'll want to see and judge who's best to take along.

"From that perspective it could be a different line-up to what we saw on Sunday.

"We're expecting a difficult game and there'll be players vying for positions so there'll be plenty of motivation for England to do well tomorrow night... and that's exactly what we want.

"Whatever's presented on the night, we will be ready for it."
