Wigan's Callum McManaman has been named in the 23-man England Under-21 squad for next month's European Championships in Israel, although Raheem Sterling misses out through injury.

Just days after his man-of-the-match performance in the Latics' FA Cup triumph against Manchester City, McManaman's fine form has been rewarded with a first call-up by the Young Lions.

However, a thigh injury has put paid to Liverpool winger Sterling's hopes of being included in Stuart Pearce's squad, with Manchester City's Jack Rodwell also absent.

England squad for Under-21 European Championship:

Goalkeepers - Butland (Stoke), Steele (Middlesbrough), Rudd (Norwich)

Defenders - Caulker (Tottenham), Clyne (Southampton), Dawson (West Brom), Lees (Leeds), Rose (Sunderland, loan from Tottenham), Shaw (Southampton), Smith (Tottenham Hotspur), Wisdom (Liverpool)

Midfielders - Chalobah (Watford, loan from Chelsea), Henderson (Liverpool), Ince (Blackpool), Lansbury (Nottingham Forest), Lowe (Blackburn), McEachran (Chelsea), McManaman (Wigan Athletic), Shelvey (Liverpool), Townsend (QPR, loan from Tottenham)

Forwards - Zaha (Crystal Palace, loan from Manchester United), Marvin Sordell (Bolton), Connor Wickham (Sunderland).
