McClaren leads Twente to Eredivisie title

Steve McClaren seemed about as far away from major silverware as it was possible to be when he traipsed off at Wembley, umbrella in hand, after his England side were beaten at home by Croatia in October 2007.

On Sunday his coaching reputation was back on track as he led FC Twente to the Dutch title.

His side's 2-0 win at NAC Breda ensured Twente's first Eredivisie win, holding off the challenge of Martin Jol's Ajax Amsterdam side.

It is the culmination of two years in the job for McClaren, who had managed Middlesbrough in the Premier League before replacing Sven-Goran Eriksson as coach of the Three Lions.

"We made history. It's more than miracle," McClaren said. "I said at the beginning of the season I don't know if we have a team, I couldn't tell. They grew and grew, they deserve it. They deserve it.

"The players have been under pressure from day one. Ajax kept coming, kept coming and we've kept winning. This was perfect for them."
