Martin Glenn: Roy Hodgson has total support

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn says Roy Hodgson has his "total support", amid ongoing speculation about the England coach's future.

Hodgson has found himself under the microscope after seeing his much-changed England side held to a goalless draw by Slovakia in their final Group B match, allowing Wales to pip them to top spot.

There were reports that Hodgson's decisions in that match had not gone down well with executives in the FA hierarchy, but Glenn has assured that the governing body were fully behind the 68-year-old.

He said in the Independent: "Roy has my total support.

"I actually don't know where these stories are coming from. They don't come from me, they don't come from the chairman (Greg Dyke). So I think it is speculation in those idle hours in between games. He has our full support, he has been a great manager and I think we are going to do great things in this tournament."

Outgoing FA chairman Dyke has made it clear England may need to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2016 for Hodgson to be assured of a contract extension beyond the end of his deal this summer.

England are favourites to progress from their last-16 clash against Iceland on Monday, but it could be they will come up against host nation and tournament favourites France in the last eight.

Glenn made no comment about Hodgson's long-term future but said: " We want to just see progress, that is all we have said all along. This is a building team. We should turn up to every tournament being prepared to win it.

"So I don't see a tournament as just a stepping stone but it is a developing squad. It is the youngest squad that we have had in a generation.

"I think we will continue to see improvement so yes we need to show progress and then take a view from there."
