Mark Sampson eyes European glory for England Women

Boss Mark Sampson has thrown down the gauntlet to England's women as they prepare to launch their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign.

The Lionesses face Estonia in Tallinn on Monday as they play for the first time since finishing third in the summer's World Cup.

They were the highest-placed European nation in Canada but have never won the European Championships.

Sampson, who made seven changes from his World Cup squad, was keen to stress the side needs to continue to progress over the next two years but outlined their final goal.

He said: "The team have set a target and we want to win the tournament. We know if it was played tomorrow we certainly wouldn't be favourites. We'd be big underdogs and it would be very difficult to do that, but we have a two-year process.

"I'm sure there are six or seven teams who are looking saying they can be competitive and go on to win it.

"I don't believe Norway, France, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland and Holland aren't saying the same thing but it's about how you live it.

"This group of players have to go away every day and if we want to think that big we have to back it up with some actions in our day to day lives."

Sampson has just 16 outfield players available after Arsenal duo Siobhan Chamberlain (knee) and Alex Scott (hamstring), Chelsea winger Claire Rafferty (knee) and Manchester City's Lucy Bronze (knee) pulled out through injury.

He resisted the chance to call up Sunderland's Beth Mead, who is the Women's Super League top scorer with 11 goals, although she has trained with the squad at St George's Park.

Sampson said: "We have to look at the bigger picture. Beth has had a fantastic season but there's still a bit for her to do. We certainly see a huge amount of potential."
