In a bid to take the title of “most ridiculous place to hold a World Cup” from Qatar, Macclesfield are bidding to host the tournament in 2026.

According to the official website of Macclesfield Town FC: “We want to bring the tournament to East Cheshire”.

And, quite frankly, who wouldn’t.

From the start, let’s end talk of this just being some flippant satire aimed at the questionable decisions made by Fifa in recent years. Of course it’s a sensible bid – it’s got a logo!

Macclesfield have also covered all the basic provisions necessary to host a World Cup. The bid includes the following…

8 fully functional “stadia” – including the home ground of Congleton Town FC plus Bollington Cross Playing Fields (which has a capacity of 120 humans and 8 dogs).

9 top-notch training grounds (all playing fields) - with the proviso that it is ”the responsibility of each association to make sure that the pitch is clear of dog foul”.

The willingness to invest in air-conditioned venues – even though Macclesfield’s average temperature in June is 14.1C.

Free wifi! Available at Macclesfield library, to help the media covering the tournament.

6 hotels and 16 B&Bs - it’s not in the bid, but we assume camping is also an option (so everyone’s catered for really).

A bid under budget – Macclesfield reckon they can pull all this off for just £249.99, plus £40 put aside as “gifts for the Fifa family”.

In an appeal to the  good sense of whoever takes the over reins at Fifa during the next few months, Macclesfield have released this statement: “Given the current predicament that FIFA finds itself in, we feel it is vital that a sensible bid is submitted for the next World Cup.

“This tournament will provide a sustainable and comfortable tournament for the associations of FIFA and the football family.”

We just hope Sepp Blatter’s successor takes the future of world football as seriously as the Silkmen do.
