Lampard plays down second place

Midfielder Frank Lampard does not believe finishing second in Group C will harm England's World Cup chances. Wednesday's 1-0 victory over Slovenia confirmed England's place in last 16 but the USA's last-gasp winner against Algeria ensured they and not the Three Lions progressed as Group C winners. England must now take on Germany in Sunday's first knockout round, while the United States will face Group D runners up Ghana. Fabio Capello's side could also face Argentina in the quarter-finals and the likes of Spain or Italy in the last four in a testing route to the final, but Lampard is unperturbed. "I couldn't care less that we have finished second," he said. "You cannot pick and choose your future matches. "And finishing second might actually be a bonus for us because it now means we've got an extra day's rest before our next game on Sunday, rather than playing on Saturday."
