Frank Lampard believes England boss Fabio Capello has succeeded in his mission to revive the national team as the World Cup approaches.
The failure to qualify for Euro 2008 under Steve McClaren led to Capello's appointment, and the Italian has transformed the team's fortunes, with an outstanding run of form during the World Cup qualifiers raising hopes for success at the tournament in South Africa.
Lampard told the Daily Mirror: "We are going into this World Cup with a very good mindset, especially when you compare where we are to where we were. There was a time when we played for England when we didn't believe we could beat anybody, almost. Now there is a real belief when we run out on to the pitch."
Capello's input has been key, as Lampard added: "We were a group of individuals who were not doing what we were capable of doing but he brought us into line from the start."
Meanwhile Spain striker Fernando Torres has identified his Liverpool colleague Steven Gerrard as a potential matchwinner for England, and believes the Reds captain would be at his most dangerous if played in an attacking role.
Torres told the Daily Express: "There are maybe five players at the World Cup who can win a big game on their own - Stevie is one of them.
"He's in the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, that's how good he is. I prefer it when he plays further forward for England and supports Rooney. That is when England look at their most dangerous."
