Lambert deserves call-up - Hodgson

Rickie Lambert's rise to the England ranks is a genuine good news story - but one that merely underlines the lack of striking options at Roy Hodgson's disposal.

Lambert has been rewarded for his outstanding contribution to Southampton's return to the top flight last term with his first international call-up for next week's friendly with Scotland at Wembley.

It completes a remarkable journey for the 31-year-old from Kirkby given the humble origins of a career that began at Blackpool and took it stints at Macclesfield, Stockport and Rochdale before a move to Bristol Rovers, and finally Southampton, who at the time were in League One.

Even then, questions were being asked of Lambert as Saints began their own journey back to the top flight.

He has answered them all though, which is why, in the absence of injured duo Daniel Sturridge and Andy Carroll, Hodgson is adamant Lambert deserves his selection.

"Everyone said he couldn't play at the next level but each time, he has done it," said Hodgson.

"Who knows? He might even surprise everyone by showing he can do it at the England level.

"It's good to have a guy like him on board. If there is a reward for doing the right things in your career and battling through hardships then Lambert is a shining example.

"I make no apologies for his selection."

Indeed Hodgson was one of many top-flight bosses who took a shine to Lambert when manager of Fulham.
