Rio Ferdinand, the England captain, has suffered a knee injury during the squad's first training session in South Africa and been sent for a precautionary scan. The Manchester United centre-back, 31, missed large chunks of the season because of a back problem. "Rio picked up a knee problem in training. It happened near the end. He has gone to hospital for a scan and we will have to see how things are," said Fabio Capello, the England coach. "He did it during a tackle. It was a normal tackle, but there was a slight problem. It was his left knee. We have to wait for the scan." David James also sat out the session because of a knee concern, although Capello stressed he was expected to be return to training immediately.
