Kerry Dixon: Defoe's England recall 'reward' for Sunderland heroics

16 March 2017 16:31

Kerry Dixon believes Jermain Defoe deserves his surprise recall up today to the England squad, and it wouldn’t be a shock if he played some part in the game against Germany. England are hard pressed to find strikers with captain Wayne Rooney, in-form Harry Kane and Daniel Sturridge out injured, Dixon will be giving live and personal commentary on the Germany-England game from Planet Hollywood on Wednesday evening. In an exclusive interview to promote the live event, Dixon says:

“Defoe has got his reward for what he’s done this season for Sunderland, giving them a chance to stay up with his goals.

“He has returned from Canada and shown that if your good enough it doesn’t matter whether you are young or old, if you can do a job you deserve to be picked.

“He has certainly put himself into contention, as an England call up invariably is a reward for what you achieve on the pitch for your club over a season, and he has done remarkably well in a side fighting relegation.

“I expect Gareth Southgate will stick with Rashford and Vardy, but Defoe might be involved in the mix, his goal record has pushed him into contention. "
