Katanec wary of new-look England

Few coaches want to face the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and John Terry, but Srecko Katanec would much rather be leading Slovenia out against them than England's current crop of pacy, attacking players.

Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Ljubljana will be the Three Lions' first match on Slovenian soil and just the fourth meeting between the countries since first six years ago.

Then, just like their World Cup encounter the following year, England were victorious and able to call upon the like Gerrard, Lampard and Terry - stars who have since retired from international football.

However, Slovenia head coach Katanec says the departure of such big names hinders rather than helps his side, such is the quality of young talent at Roy Hodgson's disposal.

"I have read reports in the media saying that England's team isn't as good as it once was, that they don't have any big stars or world-class players like Terry, Lampard and Gerrard," he said ahead of the match.

"Don't even think that England doesn't have any big stars. If it was up to me, I wish they still had players like that.

"I would prefer to play against them because they are past their prime.

"The manager has formed a younger team which is much faster, can play short passes and more attacking football."

England arrive at the Stadion Stozice looking to end the season unbeaten for the first time in 24 years, while maintaining their 100 per cent record in qualification.

That included November's 3-1 win against Slovenia at Wembley, but few expect the reverse fixture to be so straightforward against the side second in Group E.

The hosts will be better suited to the warm conditions and have won their last four competitive home games without conceding , although Katanec knows little can be read into that ahead of England's visit.

"You cannot really compare San Marino and England," the Slovenia head coach said of their home form.

"The matches against England are against a top team and it's going to be completely different.

"The players have their own roles and will have to work very hard to stop the England team."

Fiorentina attacking midfielder Josip Ilicic echoed his manager's sentiments, laughing off suggestions that England are in crisis following last weekend's goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland.

"We know what a quality team England is," he said. "They have a group of players and any one of them can decide the match.

"That was a friendly match and there is now a different level of motivation and different factors at play. I think England will be motivated and ready for tomorrow."
