Karen Carney predicts tough time in Serbia despite 7-0 rout

Karen Carney believes playing Serbia in the Euro Championship qualifier in Stara Pazova will be difficult despite beating the side 7-0 at Adams Park on Saturday.

The Lioness' midfielder scored a hat-trick in Saturday's win, her second in an England shirt, but does not believe the scoreline will be as big when they travel to the Sports Center of FA of Serbia for the reverse fixture on Tuesday.

England faced Serbia in the 2011 Euro qualifying campaign in Belgrade and despite going into the second half with a 2-0 lead the sides shared the points.

Talking about that night Carney said: "I think it'll be difficult (on Tuesday). I remember playing in Serbia a few years ago and we were 2-0 up and drew 2-2.

"It's really, really hot. I think they'll bank up a little bit more, maybe park the bus again, but fair play to them, try to play out.

"They popped us a few times (on Saturday).

"It is a cliche but no two games are the same and it won't go the same way as it has done.

"I think it'll be a lot harder, a lot more difficult and I just hope (we manage to use) the same principles.

"We can press aggressively, do our combat zones and we are clinical in front of goal.

"We are exciting even when the system changes and then the subs come on and give us another lease of life.

The win on Saturday saw Mark Sampson's side move to just one point behind group seven leaders Belgium with a game in hand and a victory in Serbia would see them go top.

Since winning bronze in the World Cup in 2015, there has been an increase in support for the women's game as well as increased competition in the Women's Super League but Sampson believes there is still a long way to go to get the best out of the players.

He said: "I thought the players who came in (on Saturday) made a difference but every time I look behind me and look at the strength and depth I have on the bench it breaks my heart to not bring them on.

"They are such a great group, they support each other and they work hard.

"I think we still have a long way to go (in the women's game), I think we really need to make sure that we are taking care of the players and making sure we are balanced in getting the fitness levels we want.

"We know we need to be stronger, we need to be fitter and we have to work hard as a game to get our players in the best possible positions to minimise injuries."

Jordan Nobbs has been ruled out of the game after missing the 7-0 win due to a hamstring injury.

The Arsenal midfielder becomes the third player to withdraw after Fran Kirby and Gilly Flaherty pulled out of Saturday's game with leg injuries.
