    Jordaan calms World Cup fears

    10 Jan 2010 - 11:31:28

The head of South Africa's World Cup organising committee has dismissed suggestions that the attack on Togo's team bus at the Africa Cup of Nations will have implications for the summer's global showpiece.

On Friday the bus carrying the Togo team from their training camp in DR Congo to their base for the upcoming tournament in Angola came under fire.

The attack is reported to have killed three people and has resulted in Togo pulling out of the tournament.

However, despite the negative spotlight focusing on African football, World Cup boss Danny Jordaan has played down its significance on the World Cup finals.

"It's nothing to do with it and I think everybody understands it has nothing to do with South Africa," he said.

"When there was a bomb in London no-one said we should not have (the) 2012 (Olympics) in London so we cannot have double standards.

"Every country's responsibility is to safeguard the event in their country so South Africa is nothing to do with the deployment of the forces in Angola.

"The world must be balanced and must not apply different standards when it comes to the African continent.

"Our World Cup is secure and we are confident because we have employed a lot of resources to safeguard the event in our country."
