    Jordaan: Cup security is paramount

    12 Jan 2010 - 13:08:59

South Africa World Cup chief Danny Jordaan has reiterated his claim that every step has been taken to avoid the threat of terrorism during the tournament.

The first World Cup to be held on the African continent has come under the microscope following the gun attack on the Togo team bus at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Three people were shot dead in Angola on the eve of the tournament but Jordaan has reassured the world that South Africa is taking security extremely seriously.

"We started back in 1994 when we first made a bid for the 2006 World Cup and since then we've hosted 147 major events," said Jordaan, the chief executive of South Africa's World Cup organising committee.

"Last year alone we hosted the Confederations Cup, the British and Irish Lions tour, we had Manchester City (during pre-season friendlies), we had the Tri-Nations, we had Super 14 matches and a host of other events which ended with the World Cup finals draw in Cape Town.

"We've looked at every area of security - route security, hotels, training venues, base camps, fan parks and stadium security and that is part of a comprehensive security plan which has been tested over all of those events."
