England defender Phil Jones has been ruled out of his side's friendly game at home to Germany on Tuesday with a thigh problem, the Football Association confirmed on Saturday.

Manager Roy Hodgson revealed that Jones had sustained the injury after England's 2-0 loss to Chile on Friday and he has now returned to Manchester United for treatment.

"Phil Jones has been ruled out of England's final match of 2013 against Germany on Tuesday evening," read a statement from the FA.

"The Manchester United defender picked up his injury during England's defeat to Chile on Friday evening, and following a scan today (Saturday) he has returned to his club."

Everton's Phil Jagielka is expected to take Jones's place alongside Gary Cahill at the heart of the England defence against Germany.

Captain Steven Gerrard, right-back Kyle Walker and strikers Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert are also in contention to return to the starting XI after missing the Chile game through injury.
