Johnson and Welbeck give Hodgson injury headache

England coach Roy Hodgson is sweating on the fitness of Danny Welbeck and Glen Johnson ahead of Euro 2012.

Neither man was able to play any significant part in training on Thursday, with Johnson departing after only a few minutes with what the FA said was a "bruised toe" and Welbeck having a solo session as he attempts to recover from an ankle injury sustained in the Manchester derby on April 30.

Neither man is expected to figure in Saturday's friendly with Norway in Oslo.

However, with Hodgson's 23-man squad due to be confirmed with UEFA on Tuesday, it is understood the England coach has serious doubts over both men and has not ruled out the possibility of making an 11th-hour change.

There was some good news on Thursday as Scott Parker came through his first serious workout since having an injection to ease an Achilles injury last week.

Hodgson is wary of the possibility of a reaction, though, and will monitor the Tottenham man closely over the weekend.

It is Welbeck and Johnson who are giving most cause for concern though.

Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge is the standby striker, whilst Hodgson has already called Liverpool defender Martin Kelly into his squad as cover for Johnson, in addition to Phil Jagielka, who is already on standby.

It is Jagielka who looks set to get the nod against Norway judging by the formation Hodgson used at the Etihad Stadium. The Everton man partnered Joleon Lescott in central defence, with Manchester United's Phil Jones at full-back.

On the opposing team was the familiar figure of Gary Neville, who has joined Hodgson's backroom staff on a four-year contract and is already making his presence felt judging by the cajoling he was giving to Andy Carroll, who looks set to start on Saturday.
